Joseph Plaskett, A Life in Painting

Title: THE ARTIST AT WORK, 1996-Artist: Joseph Plaskett
- oil on canvas - 31 3/4 x 39 1/2 in. - framed / image from: Gallery 78 website
Joseph Plaskett
image credit: www.canada.com“I cannot paint from either memory or imagination. I must have a piece of the external world in front of me, then I just start to draw as spontaneously as possible.” - quote artist Joseph Plaskett from article “Artist out of his time”, written by Grania Litwin, Times Colonist, Sat. Sept.6, 2008
“He is a fascinating artist because he has been involved in the whole Canadian art scene for 70 years. He painted with A.Y. Jackson in 1944.”
I came across an announcement for an exhibition opening in Victoria, BC. tomorrow, Sept 7. The artist- Joseph Plaskett, is one of Canada’s most talented and established contemporary painters. The exhibition at Winchester Galleries celebrates Plaskett’s 90th birthday, and brings together over 100 oils and pastels spanning the last five decades.

Manipulate This . . . Canadian Digital Art Exhibition

poster image from Gallery 96 website
Gallery 96 presents at Factory 163
Manipulate This is an exhibition featuring the work of ten Stratford area artists, which expresses their vision of hybrid art. It explores the digital arts from the perspective of traditionally artistic backgrounds such as that of painting, sculpture, photography, drawing and printmaking. The opening reception is on Saturday, September 6 at 8 pm. The show is at Factory 163 at 163 King St in Stratford in the southwest corner of the building. Nick Storring provides music for the evening in a meld of the classical and electronic. The exhibition runs from Saturday, September 6 to Sunday, September 14 and is open daily from noon to 5 pm. The artists will be present at the reception.
Arts writer Christine Walde comments on artists influenced by the new media arts:
“Artists have always employed the technologies of their time, and as the knowledge and usage of computers and digital technology increases, it is only natural that artists should incorporate this technology into their work, pushing the boundaries of their artistic practice. As a result, a new generation of artists are emerging, exploring technology at the root of its power. As the future pulls us forward, many artists feel they are compelled to follow in modernism’s footprints, propelled by the technology that carries them. In many ways, digital technology and new media is the new clay. But what’s most interesting, however, is when the technology falls away to reveal the art itself and the viewer is empowered.” snippet from exhibition announcement

Accessible Art - 20X200.com
image: screenshot from 20×200.com website 20 x 200 is a Jen Bekman project
Another wonderful project that makes art accessible for everyone! - Congratulations Jen Bekman!!
large editions + low prices × the internet = art for everyone
200 x $20 ea
20 X $200 ea
2 X $2000 ea
Snippet from the website:
“As we see it, there are a lot of people out there who want to sell their art and a lot of people who’d like to buy it. They just have a hard time finding each other. The internet is the perfect place to bring those people together, and we’re exactly the right people to make it happen. We’re passionate about art and the internet at 20×200. We’re really excited about creating a place where almost any art lover can be an art collector.”
“We introduce two new pieces a week: one photo and one work on paper. Each image is available in three sizes.* The smallest size is reprinted in the largest batch – an edition of 200 – and sold at the lowest price – $20. Hence the name 20×200. (200×20 just didn’t sound as good.) We also offer bigger prints for bolder collectors - medium-sized editions of 20 for $200, and large-sized editions of 2 generally for $2000 (some of the large sized editions will actually be original pieces of art and prices will vary a bit). Every single print is delivered with a certificate of authenticity numbered by the artist.”
Jen Bekman opened her pocket-sized gallery on the Lower East Side (NYC) nearly 5 years ago with the mission of supporting emerging artists and collectors, and she’s made a name for herself doing just that. 20×200 takes the mission one step further, making art available for everyone.
