The cotton portion is made from recycling our own paper waste. Displaying the fine texture of a pastel paper Sugar Cane lends every image an artistic look and feel. Hahnemuhle will donate a percentage of each Sugar Cane 300gsm paper sale toward worthy international environmental projects.”

A while back I did some thinking about the “Digital Artistic Process” and concluded that when creating digitally you have to wear “2 Hats”. The first “hat”, that of artist-creator, and the second “hat”, that of printmaker. Since we as digital artists do not directly apply paint to canvas, or pencil stroke to paper, or chisel to stone, that means our creative thinking/working patterns are a little different. Our final work of art remains in the original matrix (our computer) for viewing, that is, until we decide to materialize it, in the form of an output on a digitally receptive substrate, ie: a digital fine art print.
Definition of “Substrate”:
Ultimately, the material that receives the printed image. Sometimes called “media” in digital printing. The single or multi-layered base material of the medium, which can have a very simple or complex structure and is a carrier for the coating, if present. Glossary of Digital Art and Printmaking

For example, two years ago I decided I wanted to digitally print one of my images directly onto a rigid metal substrate. Since I fell in love with the beautiful sheen and lovely texture of brushed aluminum panels, I decided I wanted to allow a certain amount of this brilliant surface to show through in the final work. So even before opening my computer, I had to work in reverse and think as a printmaker would. “Transparency” was the keyword. Therefore I remembered my days working in the art department of a commercial printer and proceeded with my image accordingly. It worked! I was very happy with the final print. For testing purposes, another print was made at the same time. With this one I lowered the opacity of the image to see if I could still get a certain amount of the brushed aluminum to show through. Although it did look “OK” it was somewhat bland to the eye. (below – Quarter Horse)

And I did one final test, this time using a “white” rigid substrate, rather than the brushed aluminum. I held the opacity at 100% and added a top “texture” layer before flattening the image. I was surprised with the outcome of this one, it truly “popped”, the colours along with the texture. (below – Allure)
