on display at the Paris-Beijing Photo Gallery II - November 23, 2008 - January 22, 20009

Ju Duoqi

Ju Duoqi is a young talented Chinese artist, full of creativity. In The Vegetable Museum series, she revisits in a stunning way some masterpieces of the western painting. Making use of vegetables and food of China’s everyday life – tofu, cabbage, ginger, lotus roots, coriander, sweet potato…

“– and through digital manipulation, she presents a puzzling series of vegetable compositions representing world famous paintings like Mona Lisa, The Cene by Leonard Da Vinci, The Dream by Pablo Picasso or Marilyn Monroe by Warhol.”

Food and aliments are recurrent in Ju Duoqi’s works. She puts them out of their natural context to give them a second life. In The Vegetable Museum, the vegetables change of status: ordinary, coarse, insignificant, perishable, they become exceptional and lasting.

Born in 1973 in Chongqing, Ju Duoqi.is graduated from The Sichuan Fine Arts College. She currently lives and works in Beijing. Part of the One Child Policy generation, Ju Duoqi saw China huge transformation, the transition from an agricultural society to a post industrial society.

Colorful, creative, Ju Duoqi collages astonish. She creates her own language and destabilizes the boundary between reality and fiction. The vegetable and fictive world of Ju Duoqi is an invitation to the sensorial and provocative journey, like the artist herself. - snippet from Paris-Beijing Photo Gallery website

Fractal Art Images above from artist Stewart Lawrence’s website (with permission)

A week ago today I received an email from Fractal Artist Stewart Lawrence who lives and creates his art in Crookwell, Australia. - (quote from email: “I am a eighty two year old fractal artist who produces unique images please look at my website and reply.”)

I adore fractals! . . . so I clicked over to take a peek at his works. Now I know why they call him the “Fractal Master”!! I browsed at leisure, enjoying the magnificent colours, the symmetry, the meanings that were popping out at me, and the fractals that really generated a “WOW FACTOR”, I lingered a bit longer to admire. Although all are definitely beautiful renders, I’ve posted a few of my fav’s above, & I highly recommend that you take a pop over to Stewart’s website to view his galleries and read more about is his fascinating art career!

One day a friend loaned me a computer that was to change my style of art for the final time. “It had a ‘Fractal Generator’ installed and I became totally devoted to this form of creating… So much so that the excitement of creating this unique and futuristic style of fractal images also caused an improvement in health!”Fractal Artist Stewart spends countless hours perfecting his images and is excited to display his artwork for the world to enjoy.

Camera-less Imagery - The Art of Gero Gries

Title: Plantage - Image from Artist Gero Grie’s website

Gero Gries has dedicated himself to creating artistic works using digital techniques. He understands computer-aided image production as a continuation of painting by other means. Although his images seem photo-realistic, they could not be achieved with a traditional lens. The images are entirely constructed by the artist himself, using an array of continuously developing computer techniques, which place Gries’ work in closer proximity to painting than to photography. The comparison becomes more evident due to the artist’s choice of classical themes and genres. snippet from artists bio @ [DAM]Berlin website

Mr. Gries lives and works in Berlin and is represented by [DAM]Berlin  |   www.dam-berlin.de and is part of   -  Art.Fair 21, Opening in Cologne (Oct. 3-5, 2008)

The Visual Humor of Artist: Don Stewart

DS Art - is the on-line gallery of brain-teasing composite drawings, from the delightfully twisted mind of doctor-turned artist, Don Stewart.

“With art - with creativity in general for that matter - it really makes little difference what medium you choose. You get an idea, you want to get it out there, whether you use a pencil, a brush, a computer or a camp stove. We’re decidedly lo-tech around here. Cut and paste still means scissors and glue. It may not be glamorous, but for me drawing is simpler, more direct. Head to hand to paper.”

“I cannot paint from either memory or imagination. I must have a piece of the external world in front of me, then I just start to draw as spontaneously as possible.” - quote artist Joseph Plaskett from article “Artist out of his time”, written by Grania Litwin, Times Colonist, Sat. Sept.6, 2008

“He is a fascinating artist because he has been involved in the whole Canadian art scene for 70 years. He painted with A.Y. Jackson in 1944.”

I came across an announcement for an exhibition opening in Victoria, BC. tomorrow, Sept 7. The artist- Joseph Plaskett, is one of Canada’s most talented and established contemporary painters. The exhibition at Winchester Galleries celebrates Plaskett’s 90th birthday, and brings together over 100 oils and pastels spanning the last five decades.
