Nature of Art Appreciation

I overheard a gallery owner recently who shared the following statement with potential clients:

. . . it’s not a matter of just liking a work of art . . . you must LOVE it!!

So with that in mind, I set off on an “Art Journey” of sorts, to see if I could find works of art that generate a “WOW FACTOR” within me, works of art that stir me, and that I would  enjoy living with.

It’s difficult to explain the how and why of my selection, I guess the old saying: “Art is in the eye of the beholder” holds true to a certain extent. I believe it has a little bit to do with “perception” (a single unified awareness derived from sensory processes while a stimulus is present.)

“It’s the manipulation of three-dimensional space through color and tone that has led commentators such as Nature’s Margaret Livingstone to consider artists to be in a similar vein as neurobiologists. “Visual artists are, in a sense, neurobiologists of vision, studying the potential and capacity of the visual brain with techniques that are unique to them,” says Livingstone.” - snippet from an article titled: written by author Rusty Rockets - 13April 2007

This short art journey has proven a wonderful exercise, and I hope to continue to keep my eyes and heart open in my future explorations of art. I guess it goes to show that even if one is an artist, the nature of art appreciation is truly another form of personal self-expression.  So next time you are out and about enjoying art, in whatever form it may take, remember to STOP if you start to feel that “WOW FACTOR”, let yourself be moved, as Love must truly be in the air!
